Labyrinthine-Vestibular Disorders 

This disorder refers to damage to the inner ear.  Serious problems with balance is most common since the  inner ear is primarily responsible for balance.  This disorder also includes tinnitus, or ringing in the ears.  Tinnitus and progressive hearing loss is almost always present with the problems of balance.   Some people may have problems with balance and not even have suffered hearing loss and other people may have suffered hearing loss with no problem with balance.  Each case is different. However one of the most important factors in this disorder is the frequency of the attacks of balance disturbance.  How often does the person have a problem with balancing?  The most crucial test to prove this disorder is disabling is something called the electronystagmogram  or ENG.   if you are having frequent attacks of being unable to balance due to Meniere’s disease and you have a positive ENG test you will be able to present a powerful case to the Social Security Administration.  The positive test will support your testimony about vertigo.  The Social Security judge will not have to wonder if you are telling the truth, the test will support your claim.  Special equipment is needed by the doctor in order to test you for Ménière’s disease.  Not every doctor will have this equipment.  Ask your doctor if he or she does EMGs.  Usually large medical centers will have this equipment.
