Can You Work While Applying for Social Security Disability?

Many people applying for Social Security Disability benefits still try to work in some capacity. A common question is whether working will automatically disqualify you from receiving benefits. The answer depends on how much you work and how much you earn.

Working While Applying for Disability

You can work while applying for Social Security Disability, but there are limits. Social Security looks at whether your work activity is considered substantial gainful activity (SGA). If your monthly earnings are over the SGA limit, Social Security may decide that you are not disabled under their rules.

Even part-time work can raise concerns if it shows you are able to perform consistent work duties.

Why Work Can Affect Your Claim

Social Security disability benefits are meant for people who cannot work at a substantial level due to a medical condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. If you are working and earning above the allowed amount, it may suggest that your condition is not severe enough to qualify.

However, limited or unsuccessful work attempts do not always disqualify you.

Unsuccessful Work Attempts

If you tried to work but had to stop or reduce hours because of your medical condition, Social Security may consider this an unsuccessful work attempt. In some cases, this type of work will not count against your disability claim.
